ECP External Counter Pulsation
The CardiAssist ECP System is a non-invasive, circulatory assist device that provides external counter pulsation for the treatment of ischemic heart disease (angina). The therapy does not require any type of anesthesia. The system improves cardiac function by enhancing perfusion of the coronary vasculature, using a mechanism similar to the intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP).
The Company's CardiAssist System consists of a portable control console containing pumps and valves. Reusable fabric cuffs, containing inflatable plastic bladders, are fastened with Velcro® about the patient's calves, thighs and buttocks. The cuffs are sequentially inflated (first the calves, then the thighs and finally the buttocks) during diastole (when the heart is momentarily at rest between beats), synchronized with the patient's electrocardiogram or ECG. Compression of the cuffs during diastole forces blood from the legs and buttocks up to the heart, reducing the work effort of the heart and increasing the flow of blood through the coronary arteries to the heart muscle.
Patients are screened by their physician who should exercise his/her medical judgement when applying the CardiAssist ECP System to patients with:
- Severe peripheral vascular disease/phlebitis
- Aortic valve insufficiency where regurgitation would prevent diastolic augmentation
- Aneurysms
- Arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, ventricular tachycardia
- Bleeding diathesis (Coumadin therapy with PT greater than or equal to 15)
- Severe hypertension or hypotension (greater than or equal to 180/110mmHg or less than 80/50mmHg)
- Cardiac catheterization within 1-2 weeks
- 6 - 8 weeks post pacemaker implant
- Cardiac Surgery within 3 months
- Pregnancy

Measure Surrogates of Autonomic Tone
It is well known that patients with heart disease develop both cardiopulmonary and metabolic compensatory mechanisms in an attempt to correct cardiac pump dysfunction and changes in lung function. A heart disease patient's autonomic nervous system alters its sympathovagal balance, shifting more to a sympathetically dominant system that exacerbates the patient's condition. Clinical manifestations of disturbances in autonomic regulation include chronotropic incompetence, exercise intolerance and abnormal kinetic responses to exercise.
It is important to be able to obtain measurements of variables that reflect the autonomic tone and cardiovascular reflex status of the patient. The CardiAssess System utilizes a set of variables that reflect upon cardiovascular reflex control such as hypoxic or hypercapnic chemosensitivity, baroreflex sensitivity, heart rate variability, or ergoreflex response. For example, in patients without cardiopulmonary disease during the recovery phase of exercise, the changes in "weight" of the various measurement components of autonomic tone return to normal. However, in a heart disease patient, recovery is slowed by the compensatory changes in autonomic balance. The measured variables therefore reflect upon the autonomic "state" of the chronic disease patient. By further linking the measured values to clinical studies of patient mortality, we can provide a risk profile of a patient that can be used to guide and improve the outcome status resulting from supportive therapy.
CardiAssess Variable Analysis
- Ventilatory Efficiency (slope of VE vs. VCO 2 )
- Chronotropic Response Index (CRI)
- Oxygen Uptake Efficiency (slope of VO 2 /log VE)
- Peak Oxygen Pulse (VO 2 /heart rate)
- Heart Rate Recovery (slope of heart rate/time after 1 minute of recovery from exercise)

Powered by STATpatch™, the STATpatch™ System is a fully mobile, wireless biometric cardiac data collection system. Our system combines powerful, state-of-the-art technology to transmit, receive, and store a patient's biometric cardiac data.
A comfortable, wireless patch is applied in seconds on a patient to be monitored. Utilizing Bluetooth® technology, the patch transmits ECG data to a Treo™ smartphone that patients either carry with them or place within 30 feet of themselves. Data is transmitted by the smartphone to an independent diagnostic testing facility that stores, and processes this data. Healthcare providers can rapidly access reports via a dedicated HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act)-compliant Web site.
